Welcome to the Audit and Assurance Unit
The Internal Audit Unit of the University, was established in 1992.
At the University Council meeting held on 7th October, 2005 the Internal Audit Unit has had a change of name to Audit and Assurance Unit.
The Audit and Assurance Unit operates as an independent appraisal function which forms an integral part of the University's internal controls. Through the provision of a professional audit and assurance service, the Unit assists management to maximise the quality, effectiveness and efficiency of all present and future operations of the University and to effectively discharge its legislative and statutory responsibilities.
In addition to its primary role, the Unit works closely with senior management in performing functions involving:
- Participation on steering committees overseeing the implementation of new financial administration systems;
- Assistance with the development of policies and procedures;
- Co-ordination of external audit processes;
- Audit certification on specific purpose grants; and
- Special purpose reviews.
The Audit and Assurance Unit reports directly to the Vice-Chancellor and the Audit and Compliance Committee, and operationally forms part of the Chancellery to reflect the independence of the Unit from University management.
The Unit operates in accordance with an annual Work Program ending May 31, which is approved by the University's Audit and Compliance Committee, and is compiled using a consultative and risk-based approach. This annual plan operationalises the Units strategic plan for the current audit year.
