ITR was established in 1965, then known as the Computer Centre, to provide a computing service to all sections of the University, including the Library and Administration. (An account of the Program's history is available.)
The services provided by the Program are used by the majority of University departments for teaching and research, by the Library for a number of functions, including an online public access catalogue, and by the Administration for a wide range of activities, from student records and examination results to financial management and payroll.
The primary roles of ITR are to provide, in order to meet the teaching, research, administrative and library needs of the University:
- local and wide area networking services;
- computing services; and
- advice and assistance with computing matters generally.
ITR is clearly a service organisation which exists solely to meet the needs of the University community.
