Services Provided
This Unit is responsible for data networking and ISP services, for the telephone network and for audio visual and videoconferencing services. Its responsibilities include capacity planning, selection, management and provision of equipment and maintenance of equipment, services, memberships and qualifications necessary to provide:
- Wide Area Networking (WAN)
Connectivity between campuses and connectivity to the Internet. These services are provided from COS funding; - Local Area Networking (LAN)
Inter-building connectivity on the campuses and facilitation of contract services to provide the wiring of new and refurbished facilities and new campuses. These services are provided from COS funding. Actual work carried out by contractors to provide connectivity and cabling in the first instance, is the responsibility of the unit requesting the work; - Network monitoring and security
Monitoring traffic on the WAN and LAN for purposes of consistent and secure service. Monitoring of traffic and changes in traffic patterns as a result of changes to the University IT services for performance tuning, capacity planning and budget formulation These services are provided from COS funding; - Web proxy and caching services
Capacity management and planning, index, search and filtering services;
- Network Accounting for Internet Access - now in Systems Architecture
Monitoring, measuring and reporting for usage of various Internet protocols with a view to apportioning and where appropriate charging for usage beyond agreed allocated quotas. These services are provided to a level of quota from COS funding and charges over and above allocation are passed direct to clients; - Audio Visual Services for Common Teaching Room facilities
A rationalisation of these services followed review and budget discussions for 2000. Common Teaching Room facilities have been upgraded to one of three standard levels and are provided from COS funding; - Audio Visual Loans Service
Equipment replacement charge out rate. The loans service is managed by the Information Services Program in line with direct services being provided through that Program; - Video Conferencing facilities
Provided and the call component charged at a rate which is subsidized from a Restructuring and Rationalisation grant until 2001. The subsidy was put in place to promote the use of videoconferencing between the two major campuses. It was envisaged that, as usage increased and communications costs decreased, we would not have to significantly increase the current charge post 2001.
Training and booking services are provided by staff from COS funding; - Voice, switchboard and directory services
Call charges and mobile phone rentals are passed on to clients. All other service for PABX units and maintenance is provided from capital for new or upgraded facilities and from COS funding for ongoing maintenance; - Handset and Cabling for voice services
Small jobs are managed internally and the equipment and upgrade component recovered and larger jobs ITR staff organise contractors and pass on the contractor charges. The staff component is provided from COS funding;
- Internet Service Provider (ISP) service - dial up connections
These services are provided by agreement with Telstra Bigpond Campus and while InfoHelp distribute media, Telstra provide 24x7 support services.
