Network Staff

The Network Section is headed by the Manager Communications Infrastructure.
We have two full time staff based at Douglas campus with full responsibility for the entire network and they are assisted by ITR staff in Cairns to manage the network there.

General Information

The responsibilities of this Unit are to provide and maintain the data network at all JCU's campuses.

The last network upgrade (completed Dec2005) upgraded our Campus LANs from 10Mbps hubs and switches to Gigabit Ethernet switches. More details on the 2005 LAN upgrade can be found at this link.

Network Structure

Wide-Area Network
JCU has a 1Gigabit/s link to the QRNO hub in Brisbane to connect to AARNET for Internet access.

The Cairns campus is connected to the Douglas campus in Townsville by a 118Mbps ATM link, which also has Voice-over-IP for internal phone calls. This link carries up to 8 concurrent Video Conference sessions for teaching and administration purposes. To preserve visual and audio quality these Video Conference sessions and voice calls have priority over any other traffic.

Cairns Campus
The network consists of Nortel 5530 switches which form the 20 Gigabit backbone which connects all the edge Nortel 5520 Gigabit Ethernet switches.

Douglas Campus
The network consists of Nortel Ethernet Routing Switches which form the 20Gbps Backbone Core network

Mackay
The network link is an ADSL link back to Douglas Campus.

Mackay Base Hospital
The network link is a 9Mbps radio link back to the AARNet backbone via the CQU Mackay Campus.

Cairns Base Hospital
The network consists of an ADSL link connected via Telstra ATM back to Douglas Campus.

Mount Isa - MICRRH
The network consists of an ADSL link connected via VPN back to Douglas Campus.

Thurday Island
The network consists of an ADSL link connected via Telstra Wide Band IP back to Douglas Campus.

Dial up Access
ITR does not currently support any central modem banks. Methods to gain remote network access to campus are described on the Infohelp page. Remote Access

Telstra Dial-Connect Service (Previously called Dial-IP)
Telstra provides a 019... number to dial which is a local call cost from any location in Australia. Telstra then charge an hourly connection rate depending on where you are in Australia (or the world). This charge is based on three "zones". This hourly usage cost will be charged back to the user on a JCU charge code as per Internet Accounting or JCU phone bill. You can obtain an application form for this service at ITR-forms

Documentation is available at Remote Access
