Off Campus access to JCU Network

Please Note:

1) This access is NOT normally available for simply reading Email. Where you are visiting another site for an extended period then Facilities exist to allow delivery of mail to that site while maintaining the integrity of your mailbox here at JCU. For mail access please read the article: Automatic Email Forwarding

If however, you are travelling and visiting many sites and need access then read the section Off Campus Access below.

2) This information is NOT applicable to off-campus users dialling directly into JCU via Modems installed at any of the JCU campus sites. There are currently no bars on the Modems.

Okay now that those two gotchas are taken care of here we go.

Incoming Access

Access to the campus network (JCUnet) from off campus via telnet rlogin and ftp is restricted at our Cisco router for security reasons. This offers some protection to your accounts from off-campus attack. The router filters incoming/outgoing packets to check access restrictions to only those hosts we have permitted. Currently incoming connections are allowed for only those users who have indicated they require same for collaborative projects. If you require off campus access for email see the section "Off Campus Access" below.

All incoming(including anonymous) ftp is open to ftp.jcu.edu.au.

Off Campus Access

If you intend to travel off campus and require telnet access back to JCU for purposes of continuing collaborative research or to use Email, or you have a colleague at another site who requires access for collaborative research, fill out the electronic Off-site Access Account Form

You will be required to give verification details, the duration that the account is required for and also the reason the access account is needed.

You will be given an account on the JCU host access.jcu.edu.au which enables your telnet access back to JCUNet. Having telnetted back to this gateway from off campus, you are then requested to specify which JCU host you want to connect to using your everyday account/password. For security reasons, the account/password information for the access host MUST be arranged and picked up prior to leaving JCU. Failing this we will pass the information on to a departmental representative. This information WILL NOT be provided by Email or phone.

PLEASE NOTE that you can set up a forwarding address for electronic mail using a .forward file under Unix or using the SET FORWARD under VMS mail. This may alleviate the necessity to set up special access back to JCU.
