SSH off campus access to James Cook University

A convenient method to access systems at James Cook University from outside JCUNet is to use the SSH (Secure SHell) protocol. To quote from ssh.org:

SSH Secure Shell is the standard for remote logins and file transfer over the Internet. It encrypts all traffic, and provides a high level of protection against hacker attacks. Main features of Secure Shell include secure remote logins, terminal emulation, fully integrated secure file transfers, secure tunneling of X11 traffic, and secure access to e-mail over the Internet.

You can find out more information about SSH at www.ssh.com. Please note that the SSH implementation available through ssh.com does have some licensing issues. A list of free implementations can be found at www.freessh.org.

Platforms: Unix/Linux, Windows 95/98/NT, Macintosh

This alleviates the need for staff and students to apply for an access account for off campus access and provides a higher level of security and access.

Unix/Linux

Many SSH implementations are available for Unix/Linux. Most Linux distributions bundle (or make easily available) a SSH implementation. A good place to check is www.openssh.com, which provides a free implementation of SSH for Unix systems.

Once you have a SSH package installed on your Unix/Linux system, you should be able to execute tthe command "man ssh" for more information on how to use SSH.

Windows 95/98/NT

There are a number of SSH implementations available for Microsoft Windows. Two such implementations that have been successfully deployed at JCU are Putty and TTSSH.

Putty is the prefered implementation, and can be downloaded as a small ready to use package for Windows 95/98/ME/NT/2000 and XP. For futher information on using and downloading Putty click here.

Further information on using and dowloading TTSSH can be found here. It is for use with Windows 95, Windows 98 and Windows NT computers.

Macintosh

There appear to be few free implementations of SSH available for the Macintosh platform as such. A solution is to use one of the free Java based implementations. One that appears to work on the Macintosh platform is MindTerm. The home page for MindTerm can be found at www.mindbright.se/mindterm/. You may download a local copy from:

Documentation on installation of MindTerm can be found at http://www.mindbright.se/mindterm/README.txt.

Another alternative is to use NiftyTelnet SSH which is derived from NiftyTelnet in a similar manner to TTSSH for Windows. This is a native Macintosh implementation. The homepage for NiftyTelnet SSH is http://www.lysator.liu.se/~jonasw/freeware/niftyssh/. You may download a local copy here:
