Internal Funding Schemes
Faculty Grants Scheme
Research Committee and the Vice-Chancellor's Advisory Committee have determined that for 2008
the funds originally budgeted for the following schemes:
will be administered through the Faculties.
It is at each Faculty’s discretion as to how the funds are used providing their allocation complies with the following principles.
- The scheme is for funding in the 2008 calendar year.
- The scheme must be widely advertised.
- The funding must be allocated on a competitive and peer-reviewed basis.
- Funding is intended primarily for specific projects. The funds are not to be used for conference travel or solely for equipment.
- There should be some prioritisation for early career researchers (i.e. those who have had their PhD awarded after 2002) and worthy new staff.
It is at the Faculty’s discretion as to quantum of funds set aside for early career researchers and new staff.
- Collaborative grants, if awarded, would be required to have significant cash and in-kind co-investment from industry partners to a level determined by the Faculty.
- Funds should not be allocated to researchers who already have significant research support, what is meant by "significant" being for the Faculties to determine.
- Preference should be given to proposals that set targets for future publications (and other outcomes e.g. external grants) that result from the grant.
- Grants are for a single year. Any request for carry forward must be ratified by the Faculty PVC and PVC (Research) by the beginning of December 2008, for submission to the VC for approval.
- Grantees must report on their grants to the Research Office in May/June of each of the two years post grant, the second being about publications and other outcomes (only).
- Submission of reports on the grants awarded is a pre-condition of future internal grant funding.
Grantees who fail to submit a report would automatically be ineligible for funding from any internal research grant scheme for a two-year period.
- Research Committee may exclude an awardee from future internal grant funding if it determines an outcomes report to be inadequate.
Faculties will issue their Faculty-specific guidelines and application forms in August.
In the meantime, queries may be directed to the Director, Research Services Jasper Taylor.
