Experience

Tammy has spent the last 10 years working in urban and rural communities throughout Western Australia, Western Samoa and far north Queensland to improve health outcomes in these communities. Her health promotion experience includes working on injury prevention projects in the Wheatbelt region of Western Australia, developing suicide prevention resources for Lifeline, Western Samoa and managing Indigenous youth health development initiatives in Armadale, Western Australia. Since 2007, Tammy has worked at the Cairns Public Health Unit, where she managed a 3 year dengue fever prevention project for north Queensland and was the health promotion advisor for Dengue Fever Outbreaks (2008-2009,2011) and a Malaria Outbreak in the Torres Strait (2011). More recently, she moved into a workforce capacity building role, aimed at upskilling health professionals and organisations in delivering effective health promotion programs in their communities. She is now transferring her professional skills into a teaching context.

Research and Professional Interests

Tammy has varied research interests, particularly in tropical diseases. Her work in dengue fever prevention has led to an interest in the use of social mobilisation to improve community participation in preventing mosquito borne diseases such as dengue fever. She is also interested in maternal health issues in developing countries and the effectiveness of community based, integrated approaches to address cultural and social risk factors related to this. Tammy is nearing completion of a Masters Public Health and Tropical Medicine.
