Office of Rural Health (Queensland Health)

Queensland Health Rural Scholarship Scheme(QHRSS) scholarships are for one year and are worth $21,000 per year (in 2009) which is treated as taxable income because you are guaranteed employment after graduation (so this may affect your Centrelink payments). Scholarship holders are required to work in rural communities for a period equal to the period of financial assistance provided to the student. You should apply for this scholarship when you are in second year.
Queensland Health Allied Health 'Area of Priority' Scholarship Scheme (QHAOPSS) scholarships are available to students in their final year of university. The allowance and conditions are more or less similar to the QHRSS scholarship, but the scholarship is available for one year only. You should apply for this scholarship towards the end of your third year.
Clinical Placement Subsidy Scheme (CPSS) subsidies are intended to assist in reducing the costs associated with undertaking a clinical placement. The subsidy will cover the cost of economy air, train or bus fares plus a living allowance and an accommodation allowance (if applicable). You should apply for a subsidy at least six weeks before the placement commences.
Services for Australian Rural and Remote Allied Health
Services for Australian Rural and Remote Allied Health (SARRAH) is a body representing rural and remote allied health professionals. SARRAH administers the following schemes.
Rural Allied Health Undergraduate Scholarship Scheme (RAHUS) scholarships are available to students who have resided in a defined rural area for a minimum of five consecutive or eight cumulative years from the age of five years and who meet certain other conditions. They are worth $10,000 per year. You can apply for this scholarship in any year of study
Allied Health Clinical Placement Scholarship Scheme (AHCPSS) provides financial assistance for travel, accommodation and living expenses during a rural clinical placement. The website contains information about when to apply.
Queensland Department of Education and Training
The Queensland Department of Education and Training offers scholarships for various purposes. In 2008 the Department offered Allied Health (Therapy) Scholarships valued at $7500 to students in their final year of study. Scholarship holders were guaranteed a position with DETA and were bonded for a period of one (1) year. It is not clear whether these scholarships are currently available.
Speech Pathologists Board of Queensland
The Speech Pathologists Board of Queensland provides funding for bursaries that are administered by the Discipline of Speech Pathology at JCU. Details will be provided to fourth year students when available.
Placement bursaries
Placement bursaries in addition to those mentioned above may be available to assist with the costs of travel and accommodation to eligible students on fourth year block placements away from Townsville.
