HDR Graduate Attributes Policy

Intent

This Policy defines the graduate attributes for Higher Degree by Research (HDR) programs at James Cook University (JCU; the University), ensuring alignment with the Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF) Level 10 criteria, including the knowledge, skills, and application expectations for HDR graduates as leading scholars and professionals capable of making original contributions to their disciplines and communities.

This Policy addresses Higher Education Standards Framework (HESF) Standards 1.4.5 and 4.2.

Scope

This Policy applies to HDR candidates undertaking a HDR program delivered by JCU, regardless of campus location.

Definitions

Except as otherwise specified in this Policy, the meaning of terms used are as per the Policy Glossary.

Introduction

In the face of complex global challenges, JCU’s HDR programs foster innovation, systematic inquiry, and interdisciplinary collaboration. JCU’s HDR candidates develop as independent researchers and critical thinkers who generate original knowledge and apply that knowledge to solve real-world challenges for our region, the tropics and beyond. JCU’s programs contribute to global sustainable development and prepare graduates for diverse career paths in academia, industry, government, and beyond.

Policy

1. Graduate attribute domains

JCU produces HDR graduates with:

  • Systematic and critical understanding of complex and substantial bodies of knowledge;
  • Expert, specialised cognitive, technical and research skills;
  • The ability to generate and communicate original knowledge and insights; and
  • Capacity to apply knowledge and skills with autonomy, authoritative judgment, adaptability, and social responsibility.

These graduate attributes are grouped into five integrated domains:

Domain 1: Disciplinary and Interdisciplinary Expertise

HDR graduates will have and be able to use:

  • In-depth disciplinary and interdisciplinary knowledge at the frontier of their field;
  • Systematic and critical understanding of theories, principles, and methodologies relevant to their discipline;
  • Advanced theoretical and practical knowledge to design and conduct original research; and
  • Technical proficiency in using appropriate technologies and techniques for rigorous, ethical data collection, analysis, and evaluation

Domain 2: Advanced Research and Innovation Skills

HDR graduates will have and be able to use:

  • Expert skills in critical reflection, synthesis, and evaluation of complex information and practices;
  • Specialised ability to develop, adapt, and apply advanced research methodologies to extend and redefine knowledge;
  • Capacity to generate, substantiate, and defend original contributions to knowledge and/or professional practice; and
  • Intellectual independence and initiative in designing, leading, and completing significant research projects.

Domain 3: Communication, Engagement, and Influence

HDR graduates will have and be able to use:

  • Advanced communication skills to articulate complex scholarly ideas and arguments clearly and persuasively to diverse audiences;
  • Proficiency in disseminating and promoting research findings through various academic and non-academic formats;
  • Interpersonal and networking skills to engage effectively and respectfully in national and international research networks; and
  • Collaborative capabilities to work across disciplines, professions, and cultures to enhance the relevance and impact of their research

Domain 4: Career Capability and Professional Practice

HDR graduates will have and be able to use:

  • A suite of transferable skills including critical thinking, project management, and communication adaptable to diverse settings;
  • The capacity for expert judgement, leadership, and decision-making in professional and scholarly environments;
  • Project management skills to deliver research outcomes within defined budgetary and time constraints; and
  • Career adaptability and strategic positioning for roles in academia, government, industry, and community sectors.

Domain 5: Integrity, Autonomy, and Social Responsibility

HDR graduates will have and be able to use:

  • Autonomy and authoritative judgment to lead research and contribute to professional practice;
  • A strong ethical framework to ensure integrity, accuracy, and accountability in all research practices;
  • Awareness and appreciation of social, cultural, gender, environmental, and philosophical perspectives relevant to their research; and
  • A socially responsible mindset to apply research insights to address local and global challenges in alignment with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.

2. Embedding Graduate Attributes

HDR graduate attributes are cultivated through:

  • Independent research guided by advisory panels;
  • Structured coursework and professional development programs;
  • Milestone assessments and thesis examination; and
  • Participation in academic, professional, and community engagement activities.

Indicators of Successful Attainment of Graduate Attributes

HDR graduates will demonstrate attainment through indicators such as (but not limited to):

  • Completion of the HDR program;
  • Publication of peer-reviewed research papers, reports and other scholarly outputs;
  • Presentation of research at scholarly and professional conferences and to the public;
  • Quality of critical thinking skills, analysis and written communication as measured in the assessment of the examined thesis;
  • Completion of professional development activities;
  • Successful engagement with business, industry, professional associations, government departments and non-government bodies and communities by completing an internship, or mentoring program, or other collaborative research-based endeavour;
  • Demonstrated capacity to realise the potential of research findings though effective communication with the broader community; and
  • Recognition of transferable and leadership skills by employers.
