Statute No. 1 - Membership of Convocation

1. Short Title

This university statute may be cited as the James Cook University (Membership of Convocation) Statute 2010.

2. Repeal

James Cook University Statute (Membership of Convocation) 2008 is repealed.

3. Definition

In this university statute –

“communication” includes electronic communication.

“mailing address” includes an electronic mailing address.

“university secretary” means the officer appointed by the university to the role of secretary to the council of the university.

4. Membership

(1) The convocation of the university consists of the following -

(a) all graduates of the university and all graduates of the Townsville College of Advanced Education;

(b) all members and past members of the council and all past members of the council of the Townsville College of Advanced Education;

(c) all past members of the Advisory Council of the University College of Townsville;

(d) graduates of the University of Queensland who, while undergraduates, were enrolled at least three years at the University College of Townsville;

(e) all members of the academic staff and general staff of the university who have requested to be members of the convocation and have been employed by the university for at least two years continuously at the time of the request; and

(f) such other persons who accept an invitation from the council to become members of the convocation.

5. Resignation of membership

Any member of the convocation may resign from membership by providing an electronic notice or by notice in writing to the university secretary.

6. Roll of convocation members

The university secretary must maintain a roll of members of the convocation containing the following information about each member -

(a) full name; and

(b) a current mailing address; and

(c) whether the member is an active or inactive member.

7. Active and inactive members

(1)A member of the convocation must be recorded in the electoral roll as either active or inactive.

(2) The university secretary will record a member as an inactive

member if -

a. the member advises the university secretary that they do not wish to be an active member; or

b. a notice of ballot is sent to the mailing address of a member and the university receives a communication that the notice has not been received; or

c. a current mailing address is not known.

(3) If the member is not an inactive member the member will be recorded as an active member.

(4) The university secretary must vary the status of an inactive member on the roll if the member notifies the university secretary that they wish to be recorded as an active member.
