Standard System of Reporting Grades

Intent

To specify the grades to be awarded for all coursework subjects and the levels to be awarded for honours degrees.

Grades for Coursework Subjects

Final grades

The following final grades are awarded for coursework subjects:

HD

Pass with High Distinction

D

Pass with Distinction

C

Pass with Credit

P

Pass

PC

Pass Conceded (may not be used as a prerequisite without permission of the relevant Head of School)

P-

Pass Minus (a borderline pass – Engineering only)

S

Satisfactory (a passing level in an ungraded subject)

N

Failure

U

Unsatisfactory (failed to reach a passing level in an ungraded subject)

WF

Failure (withdrew after the prescribed last date for withdrawal without academic penalty)

X

Failure (did not sit for examination(s), or did not complete assessment requirementsworth at least 80% of the total possible marks, or deferred examination not granted.)

SP

Pass after sitting a supplementary examination

SPC

Pass Conceded after sitting a supplementary examination (may not be used as a prerequisite without permission of the relevant Head of School)

SP-

Pass Minus after sitting a supplementary examination (a borderline pass – Engineering only)

SS

Satisfactory after sitting a supplementary examination (a passing level in an ungraded subject)

SN

Failure after sitting a supplementary examination

SU

Unsatisfactory after sitting a supplementary examination (failed to reach a passing level in an ungraded subject)

SX

Failure (did not sit for supplementary examination)

  1. 1.

    The letter ‘S’ precedes any result awarded after sitting a supplementary examination.

  2. 2.

    An ‘X’ shall not be awarded to students who complete assessment requirements worth 80% or more of the total marks for the subject. Such students should be awarded, as a final grade, either a passing grade or an ‘N’, as appropriate.

  3. 3.

    Students who are awarded a fail for a subject as a result of being proved guilty of academic misconduct will be awarded an ‘X’.

Interim Grades

The following grades are interim grades awarded for coursework subjects, pending the award of a final grade:

Result Withheld (assessment requirements are outstanding)

AI

Assessment Incomplete (the school assessment process is incomplete)

NS

Fail (supplementary examination granted)

ED

Deferred examination granted

KU

Interim result for a subject which forms part of a subject chain

Honours Results

The following levels are awarded for honours degrees:

Class I

IIA Hons

Class II division A

IIB Hons

Class II division B

III Hons
