Scholarships for Indigenous students

There are a number of scholarships for Indigenous, rural and remote students. For full details and selection criteria, visit the JCU Scholarships website.

Commonwealth Scholarships (CS)

Value: approx. $1,000 - $4,000

Closing Date: 6 March each year

Commonwealth Scholarships funded by the Commonwealth Government aim to facilitate choice in higher education and to increase higher education participation by students from low socio-economic backgrounds, particularly Indigenous students and students from rural and regional areas.

Some Commonwealth Scholarships specific to Indigenous students include:

Commonwealth Education Costs Scholarships - (Indigenous Enabling)

Assist Indigenous students undertaking the Tertiary Access Course with general education costs. Recipients will receive $1,081 for the six-month Tertiary Access Course.

Commonwealth Accommodation Scholarships - (Indigenous Enabling)

Assist Indigenous students undertaking the Tertiary Access Course with accommodation costs. Recipients will receive $2,162 for the six-month Tertiary Access Course.

Indigenous Payment Scholarships

Assist Indigenous undergraduate, Graduate Diploma of Education or Tertiary Access Course students with establishment costs. Recipients receive a one-off payment of $4,080 and will also receive a Commonwealth Education Costs Scholarship and, if eligible, a Commonwealth Accommodation Scholarship.

Hugh Alexander Grierson Trust Bursary

Value: $2,500

Closing Date: 31 December each year

Open to applicants who identify as Australian Aboriginals, who intend to study full time at JCU. The value of the bursary is for money, books, equipment or payment for residential accommodation.

Australian South Sea Islander Community Foundation Scholarships

Value: $5,000 (full-time students) per year; $2,500 (part-time students) per year

Closing Date: 17 February each year

Open to students who identify as Australian South Sea Islanders as defined in the 2000 Queensland Government Recognition Statement of the Australian South Sea Islander Community.

Elizabeth Cookson Memorial Bursary

Value: $300

Closing Date: 15 March each year

Open to applicants who are Aboriginal, Torres Strait Islanders or Australian South Sea Islanders entering their Honours year at JCU in one of the following fields of study: anthropology, history, Indigenous Australian studies or literature.
