Maths and chemistry preparatory and bridging subjects
Many health science and science courses have prerequisites of Queensland Year 12 Chemistry and/or Maths, in addition to the requirement of Queensland Year 12 English. Some also require the completion of Year 12 Physics. For those applicants who have not completed these Queensland Year 12 subjects or their equivalents, JCU offers a range of bridging subjects at the Cairns and Townsville campuses.
Townsville campus
Preparatory Chemistry – CH1020
This four-week subject is taught on-campus in intensive mode in late January/February of each year. The subject is also available in Study Period 2, though not in intensive mode. It is designed for students who have not completed Queensland Year 12 Chemistry or equivalent, or who feel that their knowledge of chemistry needs updating. This subject can be used as a prerequisite for JCU degree courses that require Queensland Year 12 Chemistry. This subject is available within the following JCU courses:

as part of an undergraduate degree (eg. Bachelor of Science)

as part of a Certificate of Science. Certificates are part-time courses designed for non-school leavers and can be completed in one year. Commonwealth supported places are not available to Certificate students and tuition fees apply.
Preparatory Maths – MA1020
Preparatory Maths is designed for students who do not have a Sound Achievement or better in Queensland Year 12 Maths B or equivalent, and who require Maths B as a prerequisite for their degree course. The course is offered as an on-campus subject in Study Period 1, with lectures held during the day.
This subject is available within a JCU undergraduate degree, or within a JCU Certificate of Science. Again, tuition fees apply for JCU Certificate subjects.

Cairns campus
Preparatory Chemistry and Physics – SC1021
This subject is designed for students who do not have a Sound Achievement or better in Queensland Year 12 Chemistry or Physics or their equivalents, and who require this as a prerequisite for their chosen degree course. This subject is offered on-campus in Study Period 1. There are two ways of enrolling in this subject:
