Tuition-fee paying students
Australian citizens and permanent humanitarian visa holders can defer their tuition fees by applying for a FEE-HELP loan.
Students repay the loan through the taxation system once their income reaches a threshold. The loan is interest-free and GST-free, but is CPI indexed annually. To apply for a FEE-HELP loan you must submit a Request for FEE-HELP Assistance form, available from our Student Enquiry Centre, before the census date for your subject/s.
Further information on FEE-HELP is available from JCU’s Current Students site and the Commonwealth Government’s site Going to Uni.
Fee-paying students may also be entitled to a tax deduction for tuition fees, including when they have deferred payment, if there is a direct connection between their education and work activities at the time the expense was incurred. Call the Tax Office on 13 28 61 for further advice.
New Zealand citizens and permanent non-humanitarian visa holders are not eligible for FEE-HELP.
Commonwealth supported students
If you are offered a Commonwealth-supported place and you are an Australian citizen or permanent humanitarian visa holder, you can defer paying your student contribution amount with a HECS-HELP loan.
Students repay the loan through the taxation system once their income reaches a threshold. For students enrolled in 2009, this is set at $41,595. The loans are interest-free and GST-free, although CPI indexed annually.
To apply for a HECS-HELP loan you must submit a Request for Commonwealth Support and HECS-HELP form, available from our Student Enquiry Centre, before the census date for your subject/s.
Further information on HECS-HELP is available from JCU’s Current Students site and the Commonwealth Government site Going to Uni.
New Zealand citizens and permanent non-humanitarian visa holders are not eligible for HECS-HELP.
