Undergraduate assistance
Youth Allowance, Austudy and Abstudy
The Federal Government provides financial assistance to students through the Youth Allowance, Austudy and Abstudy schemes. Eligibility for this assistance depends on students meeting certain conditions, which may include residential status, previous study and means (income) testing. Scholarships
JCU offers more than 400 scholarships, bursaries and grants worth more than $1.2 million to undergraduate students. These include textbook grants, faculty scholarships of up to $10,000 and scholarships for students from a range of disadvantaged groups. Indigenous students
Indigenous Cadetships
The Commonwealth Government coordinates this successful scheme that places Indigenous tertiary students with employer groups in industry and government. Employers pay an allowance to students, provide vacation employment and guarantee a position after graduation. Commonwealth Scholarships (CS)
Commonwealth Scholarships funded by the Commonwealth Government aim to facilitate choice in higher education and to increase higher education participation by students from low socio-economic backgrounds, particularly Indigenous students and students from rural and regional areas. Some Commonwealth Scholarships specific to Indigenous students include:

Commonwealth Education Costs Scholarships - (Indigenous Enabling) assist Indigenous students undertaking the Tertiary Access Course with general education costs. Recipients will receive $1,081 for the six-month Tertiary Access Course.

Commonwealth Accommodation Scholarships - (Indigenous Enabling) assist Indigenous students undertaking the Tertiary Access Course with accommodation costs. Recipients will receive $2,162 for the six-month Tertiary Access Course.

Indigenous Payment Scholarships assist Indigenous undergraduate, Graduate Diploma of Education or Tertiary Access Course students with establishment costs. Recipients receive a one-off payment of $4,080 and will also receive a Commonwealth Education Costs Scholarship and, if eligible, a Commonwealth Accommodation Scholarship.

Australian Veteran’s Children Assistance Trust
The Trust administers 16 different education assistance grant schemes, funded by the Commonwealth government, the Australian ex-service community and private donors. Financial assistance for overseas exchange students
These loans help students who wish to undertake part of their studies overseas. Amounts vary between $2,000 - $5,000 and assist towards airfares and accommodation. Further information is available from Student Administration.
JCU student loans
Students experiencing hardship may be eligible for a JCU student loan, which helps with essential study-related expenses, for example, books.
Employment opportunities
JCU’s Careers and Employment Service and the JCU Student Association offer a free service to students seeking part time, casual or vacation employment.
