Orpheus Island Research Station
World Heritage listed Great Barrier Reef
JCU's Orpheus Island Research Station offers excellent field and laboratory facilities for marine biologists and marine science researchers, university students and school groups. It is surrounded by well-developed fringing reefs and a range of mid-shelf reefs are nearby. Facilities include wet and dry labs, outdoor tanks, dive equipment and research vessels.
A range of modern accommodation facilities are available for up to 40 people.
A volunteer program is available for those interested in experiencing life at an island research station first hand.
The island is in the central section of the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park, accessible by plane from Townsville or by boat from the coast near Ingham.
