Information for international postgraduate students

Over 3,000 international students from over 105 countries study at JCU. The International Student Centre (ISC) at JCU is responsible for the recruitment, administration and on-going support of both undergraduate and postgraduate international students.

The ISC provides assistance with issues relating to accommodation, visas, tuition fees and Overseas Student Health Cover, as well as with general welfare concerns.

Entry requirements

It is recommended that international applicants contact the ISC for specific academic entry requirements for all postgraduate programs.

English language requirements

International students must provide evidence of English proficiency if English is not their first language. See English language requirements for detailed information.

Application procedure

International applicants can apply online or they can print out an application form (also available online or in the International Student Prospectus) and fax or post it to the ISC.

Study Costs

International students are required to pay the following costs:

Annual tuition fees

Tuition fee details are available in the International Student Prospectus or online

Association Services fee (ASF)

Payment of the Association Services Fee is on a voluntary basis from 2007. The JCU Student Association maintains a range of services and facilities ranging from sporting facilities to childcare and student advocacy services. The ASF varies according to your enrolment status and residence classification. The fee (GST inclusive) for 2008 is AUD$40 for a full year, irrespective of when you join.

Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC)

Most international students are required to have this health cover, which costs AUD$348 for 12 months or AUD$174 per teaching period (2008). Norwegian and Swedish students, however, do not require OSHC.

Financial assistance

Some financial assistance schemes are available for international postgraduate students, the main ones being:

• International Postgraduate Research Scholarship (IPRS) (administered by JCU);

• AusAID Australian Development Scholarships (administered by the Commonwealth Government) – further information may be obtained from AusAID

Visa information

International students are required to apply for a student visa before arriving in Australia. For further information contact your nearest Australian Embassy, Consulate or High Commissioner, listed at: http://www.dfat.gov.au/missions. You can also contact the Department of Immigration and citizenship (DIAC). The DIAC website contains comprehensive information about applying for visas, student work rights and restrictions as well as health requirements: www.immi.gov.au/immigration.htm

Working as a student

Australian immigration regulations require that international students are enrolled in full-time study mode only. Part-time study mode is not usually available to international students unless they are studying on an external basis from outside Australia. International students studying under a student visa are eligible to work up to 20 hours per week during term and full time during study vacation.
