Gulf Savannah
The Gulf Savannah is an enormous expanse of open country that stretches south below the Gulf of Carpentaria. This region is largely made up of a vast plain that gently slopes into freshwater wetlands, salt meadows, saltpans, and mangrove fringed estuaries. While seeming predictable, the gulf landscape can be surprising, giving way occasionally to an oasis. One such place is Lawn Hill National Park, which has a spectacular gorge system with sheer sandstone walls, crystal clear water and lush tropical vegetation. The region is also home to the Riversleigh World Heritage Area, containing some of the richest and most extensive fossil deposits in the world. This is the real Australian outback and only hours away from Cairns and Townsville. Find out more about the Gulf Savannah
