Professor Colin Ryan

Welcome to the website for the School of Arts and Social Sciences. It has been designed with you in mind so I hope that you find the information that you are seeking.

The School of Arts and Social Science is the largest at JCU and arguably the most diverse, incorporating traditional humanities and social science disciplines complemented by the more applied social sciences of social work and psychology. It was established in January 2007 through the merging of the former schools of Anthropology, Archaeology and Sociology, Humanities, Psychology and Social Work and Community Welfare. These schools now make up vibrant departments in the much larger School of Arts and Social Sciences.

The School takes pride in the quality of its teaching, research and research supervision and the professionalism, availability and approachability of its academic and professional staff. It is strongly international in outlook and dedicated to providing a high-quality and enjoyable learning experience for all its students whether they are Australian or from an overseas country.

The School of Arts and Social Sciences attracts a significant number of international students, to its programs at the Cairns and Townsville campuses. The school aims to provide a world-class education in a pristine tropical setting while at the same time prides itself on its commitment to the local community and the North Queensland region.

If you are a prospective student, I warmly encourage you to consider a degree in arts and social sciences at JCU.
