If you intend to travel or work overseas, or you're interested in other languages and cultures, you should consider enrolling in a short course offered by the Academy of Modern Languages at JCU.There are no exams or assignments, just a group of people learning another language in a relaxed setting.The courses are not accredited and cannot be counted for credit toward a degree program but you will receive a certificate on completion.
The programs are held one night per week (2 hours) for 12 weeks.The following languages are available:

A minimum of six enrolments is required to conduct the class.Programs commence in March and August and are held in the on the Townsville Campus.
The fee per course is $380 (GST inclusive) and must be paid in full at the time of enrolment.

Course Descriptions
Chinese - Elementary
Held Monday night
Chinese (Mandarin) is spoken as a first language by more people than any other.It is not only spoken as a first language by some 900 million people in China and Taiwan but is the official language of both.It is widely spoken among overseas Chinese around the world.From the historical perspective the Chinese language, the written language in particular, has the longest continuous history of any current modern language.
The Chinese course at the IML will introduce spoken Chinese and will give participants a useful range of social and survival language. There will be no need to learn the script but some will be introduced for those who have an interest.
Chinese - Intermediate

This course continues the work begun in Elementary Chinese but adjustments may be made depending on the entry level of students.
French - Elementary
Held Tuesday night
This course for beginners (or near beginners) is planned as a global approach to language acquisition: i.e. correct pronunciation and audio comprehension are given as much weight as the learning of useful vocabulary, the construction of some; sentences and questions and an understanding of basic French grammar.Students are shown how to ask and answer the essential "Where..?", "When..?", "What..?" and "How..?" questions, and they read about both everyday and special aspects of life in France.
French - Intermediate

This course continues the work begun in Elementary French but adjustments may be made depending on the entry level of students.
German - Elementary
Held Tuesday night
This course is designed for beginners (and near beginners) and will cover the basics of greetings and introduction.It will be a very conversational course with lots of opportunities for speaking and listening to help you with pronunciation and fluency.Some reading and writing exercises will also be part of each lesson.Grammatically, it will introduce verb conjugation, sentence structure and using modal verbs.There is also some hands on material from Germany and cultural aspects (especially differences) will make a fun addition to pure language learning.
German - Intermediate
Held Wednesday night
This course is designed as a follow on from the 12 week German beginners.The main aim of the class is to enable you to hold short conversations.Therefore, we will do lots of role plays, partnered practises and listening exercises.Reading and writing will take up a smaller part of our time in class, but here are take home exercises that will give you more opportunity to extend class work.In the first two weeks we’ll do a quick general review of verb conjugation, modals and the accusative case before moving on to the past tense and using the accusative or dative case after prepositions.Grammar is taught in a way that lets you discover the rules rather than rote learning (and forgetting them straight away).
Lots of participation will make this class fun and enjoyable
Indonesian - Elementary

This course provides students with a basic understanding of common language usage and cultural differences.On successful completion students will be able to communicate comfortably in most everyday situations.Holiday makers or business people intending to travel to Indonesia would benefit from this course.
Indonesian - Intermediate
Held Wednesday night
This course offers further discovery of the language and culture of Indonesia.You will be building and creating, using your own creativity in the target language, understanding the culture and way of life of the Indonesian people.Anyone who has a strong interest in Indonesia, its language and its people, will benefit from this course.
Italian - Elementary
Held Wednesday night
Introduction to the Italian language and culture with a focus on conversation (greetings, asking for information, talking about yourself).At the end of the course you should be able to conduct a very basic conversation and put your message across for basic requirements.
Italian - Intermediate
Held Monday night
This course focuses on talking about the past (e.g. something that happened to you just yesterday or further back in the past) with some attention given to your future (e.g. your intentions).
Japanese - Elementary
Held Monday night
An introductory course designed for those new to Japanese.This course covers everyday conversation and daily necessities, providing a basic knowledge of communicative skills.Each lesson introduces you to a functional and practical topic, which helps you learn how to communicate in a particular situation.There's no need to by a text book and handouts will be provided.Come and Experience the Japanese language and culture.

Spanish - Elementary

Hola, como esta usted, adios.These are some expressions you will hear when entering a Spanish-speaking country.What a thrill to be able to reply.You will learn to order a meal, ask the time, find out where to catch a bus or train, where to and how to buy in shops and much, much more.You will learn to understand simple yet important language spoken by the locals.No prior knowledge of the language is necessary.
Spanish - Intermediate
This course builds on the basics taught in the Elementary course.There will be continued focus on important terminology, grammar and verb usage in context.Conversation and translation will complement this.
