CAREER PROFILE:

My M.Litt from the University of New England in 1970 was on ‘Finite Projective Planes’. I also hold a B.Ed from the University of Queensland and a B.Sc from Sydney University, majoring in Pure Mathematics and Physics. I also hold a NSW Teachers Certificate and am a Qld-registered teacher.

I taught in a variety of secondary and tertiary education situations (see below) prior to commencing at JCU in 1997 as a casual demonstrator in Physics and Chemistry.

On Cairns campus I presently deliver SC1021 (Preparatory Physics and Chemistry), MA1020 (Preparatory Mathematics), MA1000 (Foundation Mathematics), ED1491 (Numeracy in Education), and am a casual tutor for BU1010 (Business Statistics).

TEACHING:

Since commencing teaching in 1966 at Iarowari-Sogeri High School PNG, in 1966, I’ve held lecturing/teaching positions at Goroka Teachers’ College PNG, the University of Papua New Guinea, Darwin Community College (now the Northern Territory University), St Augustine’s College Cairns, and Cairns TAFE.

At JCU in 1999 I originated SC1021 Preparatory Physics and Chemistry in response to the need of mature-age and other students for a systematic introduction to science degree programs. This subject is now being also chosen by some Education students.

I have also been involved in developing the curriculum of ED1491, which I’ve delivered for the School of Education since 2002, and with implementing strategies to improve student outcomes in BU1010 for the School of Business.

RESEARCH INTERESTS:

I am especially interested in the problems of access to Science and Mathematics-based degree programmes by students with deficient backgrounds in these disciplines, and have come to recognise the importance of featuring generic skills development in curriculum design.

I am also keenly interested in geometry, appropriate technology, and music.

With a very demanding teaching load, I’ve not managed in recent years to engage formally in research, or to produce publications, but hope to do so in the near future.
