Subject Description
Individual therapies in forensic settings, including cognitive behavioural therapy and dialectical behaviour therapy. Group therapy, family therapy, art therapy, music, drama and theatre in forensic settings. Responding to offender guilt, remorse, shame and reparation and their lack. Outcome studies and the evidence-base for choice of treatments. Therapeutic responses to challenging behaviours. Needs and therapeutic responses to specific client groups.

Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this subject students will be able to:

articulate and critically assess the evidence base for particular forensic practices, including responses to specific challenging behaviours such as arson, sexual offending, self-harm and suicidal and assaultive behaviour

describe a range of group and individual therapies and critically evaluate their value in forensic settings

describe the use of the arts as a therapeutic medium in forensic settings

recognise and respond effectively to the needs of special client groups, including women, young people, people with intellectual disability, people with co-occurring substance abuse, people from non-English speaking backgrounds and cultural or religious minorities, the elderly and the infirm

respond effectively to offender guilt, remorse, shame and reparation, and their lack, and give a rationale for their response.

Teaching Modes
This subject will be taught in distance education mode using study guides and readings. Contact will be maintained through individual contact with the subject coordinator by phone, email and internet.
Suggested Study Commitment
NS5364 is a 3-unit subject. This indicates a workload of about 10 hours per week. This time is divided between reading the study guide and recommended readings, and completing the activities.
