INFORMATION FROM AUSTRALIAN QUARANTINE AND INSPECTION SERVICE (AQIS) ON IMPORTATION AND EXPORT OF AMPHIBIANS

Importation into Australia

Summary: Importation is only under permit and the conditions of the permit include a requirement to hold animals under permanent quarantine in quarantine approved premises (QAP).

The importation of live amphibians as pets is prohibited by AQIS. Amphibians include frogs and toads.

Amphibians may only be imported into scientific institutions approved by quarantine or registered A class zoos, where they are held in permanent quarantine for the remainder of their lives.

CONDITIONS FOR THE IMPORTATION OF LIVE AMPHIBIANS OR THEIR EGGS

1. A Permit to Import must accompany the consignment.

2. The permit does not absolve the importer from the necessity of obtaining permission to import under the Wildlife Protection (Regulation of Exports and Imports) Act 1982.

3. The animals must be transported to Australia in secure, escape proof containers clearly Labelled " Live Animals " .

4. On arrival, all litter including moss or other absorbent materials in the containers must be destroyed in accordance with the instructions of the Chief Quarantine Officer (Animals) State of destination.

5. The amphibians must be maintained in quarantine premises approved by the Chief Quarantine Officer (Animals). Adults, tadpoles and eggs to be kept in secure containers in a locked building. Keys to be held by nominated responsible persons.

6. Dirty water from aquarium which the amphibians have been held, or had access to is to be treated with heat or a chemical toxic for all stages of amphibia before disposal.

7. No transfer of imported amphibians eggs or offspring is to be made without the permission of the Chief Quarantine Officer (Animals).

8. A register of all imported amphibians shall be kept by a nominated responsible person.

 

Export from Australia

AQIS have no quarantine policy for export of amphibians.
