Institute of Sport and Exercise Science

Exercise and health in the tropics

James Cook University's Institute of Sport and Exercise Science (ISES) is a unique provider of sport and exercise science research and education being the only such program in the tropical North of Australia. ISES is situated on the doorstep of the Great Barrier Reef, the Wet Tropics and the Great Australian Outback.

ISES academic programs aim to produce graduates with an in-depth understanding of the processes and mechanisms underlying human physical activity with a focus on the role of physical activity in the enhancement of health and well being within a rural/remote/tropical living perspective.

The level of education and training is commensurate with the recent significant increase in the number and range of employment opportunities for graduates in sport and exercise science. Employment opportunities exist in a wide range of settings such as community and corporate health and fitness, government agencies associated with sport, physical activity and health, sports academies, professional sports, rehabilitation clinics and hospitals, private business in personal training and rehabilitation, and in universities and colleges with involvement in teaching and research.

ISES collaborates with a variety of institutions (e.g., Australian Institute of Sport, National Heart Foundation, Vietnam Veterans Counselling Service, Defence Scientific and Technical Organization, hospitals, medical and allied health practices, schools and various sporting bodies) for research, consultancy and student workplace experience purposes.
