Prerequisites: BT1020 (BZ1030 recommended) or equivalent

Subject Description:

The subject will focus on principles and methods required to describe and understand the diversity of plants and their communities. The subject encompasses the basis for the description and identification of plants with special emphasis on selected Australian and tropical families, an introduction to the diversity and ecology of rainforests and savannas; soil description and interpretation; floristic and physiognomic aspects of Australian vegetation.

Contact hours:

24 lectures, 36 hours of laboratory work and 2 days of field work. First semester.

Useful texts for the Systematics portion of the course are:

  • Clifford H.T. & Ludlow G. (1978). Keys to the Families and Genera of Queensland Flowering Plants (Magnoliophyta). 2nd edition. University of Queensland Press, St Lucia. Out of print - if you can find a copy please get it. You will need access to a copy to complete the Herbarium Assignment. Copies can be borrowed from the Teaching Resource Centre. A $15 deposit must be paid (between 9:00-11:45 am Mon-Fri only), and $10 will be returned to you only on the return of the book (during the same hours).
