Subject Content:

An introduction to the biological processes responsible for transferring the information of life from generation to generation. The subject will include sections on evolutionary biology, the DNA/genetic code, mechanisms of inheritance and the development of cells and tissues.

Assessment:

Assessment by theory examination (65%); on-course assessment (35%) comprising performance in practicals, tutorials and a class test.

Contact hours:

39 hours lectures, 36 hours practicals/tutorials. Semester 2.

Text Book:

The practical manual contains general information about the subject, details of practical classes and some supplementary lecture notes.

Generally you will need only one text book for BZ1030 and BZ1020. Recommended texts are:

  • Campbell N.A. & Reece J.B. (2002) Biology, 6th edition. Benjamin Cummings, CA.
  • Knox B., Ladiges P., Evans B. & Saint R. (eds) (2001) Biology, Second Edition. McGraw-Hill, Roseville, NSW. (A very useful Australian biology text).
  • Solomon E., Berg L. & Martin D.W. (2002) Biology, 6th edition. Brooks/Cole Publishing, CA.
