R.J. Tillyard 1917
On the morphology of the caudal gills of the larvae of zygopterid dragonflies

Proc. Linn. Soc. NSW 42: 31-112

Tillyard's important paper on the structure of 'caudal gills' is almost unobtainable yet remains an essential reference for workers on Odonata. As a first step here is a facsimile of the text and figures in .xif format. This is an efficient high compression format. Although the aesthetics of the original are diminished the all important content is available. Internally text is compressed separately from figures. Figures were recorded at 300dpi so they easily withstand examination at 200% magnification (see example at the bottom of this page). I find it easiest to read with magnification set at 125 or 150 (type this into the magnification box in the top bar of the viewer).

While over 80 years have passed since this paper was prepared it has lost little in that time. A most important aspect of the work is that it is a broad comparative study and contained a wealth of new material. Despite advances in technology almost no comparable work has been done since.
NOTE: Tillyard used the terminology 'gills' without presuming function. This is discussed early in the paper.

Please right-click (or other) and download the files for local reading, rather than messing about over a long link.
The .pdf file is slightly coarser in my viewer but the pictures clean up if you use the zoom tool to expand them (this had me worried, but the information is there).

NOTE: these are all graphics files (pictures of the pages) and cannot be machine-searched.
