The first noticeable thing about rainforest is the trees. Forest structure is complex with near impenetrable layers of understory, layers of intermediate vegetation, and finally the canopy emergents. Many of the trees have enormous buttresses to provide support. Root systems tend to be superficial, running through the leaf mould or just below, in a never ending scramble to intercept nutrients.
