I was named Kurinji after a flower that blossoms only once every 12 years (Strobilanthes kunthiana) in the Kodai hills region in South India. I have lived and worked in Auckland, New Zealand and Perth, WA before settling down in sunny North Queensland. Obstetrics and Gynaecology has been my passion since med school days and thoroughly enjoy the practice, research and teaching of the discipline.

Education and Professional Experience

I am a clinical practitioner teaching Obstetrics & Gynaecology at the School of Medicine and Dentistry, at the Townsville campus. I work as a Staff Specialist in Obstetrics and Gynaecology at Townsville Hospital, Queensland Health and provide consulting services from Park Haven Medical centre with operating privileges at Mater Hospital and Hyde Park Medical Centre.

I worked and trained at National Women’s Hospital, Auckland City Hospital, Middlemore hospital (all in NZ) and King Edward Memorial Hospital at Perth, WA to becomeO&G specialist. In 2008, I had the privilege of entering the subspecialty program in Urogynaecology as the first female doctor from North Queensland in a national selection process by RANZCOG. Since then, I have continued to serve the NQ community through my employment at The Townsville Hospital in the Urogynaecology department. I am actively engaged in research, training of other gynaecologists, nationally and internationally and teaching undergraduate students and O&G registrars at the hospital.

Teaching philosophy

All my students are encouraged to gain a robust grounding in basic medical sciences with the belief that it will help them reach their true potential in the later years of practice. I strive to teach clinical medicine in such a way that students learn a balanced mix of principles of clinical O&G practice, importance of evidence and consensus, and above all, respect for patient, privacy and confidentiality. Clinical settings are my favourite teaching environments and I encourage all my students to participate actively in research irrespective of their position or expertise.

It is my personal commitment to try and find research opportunities for students and I encourage indicating active interest, by email to kurinji.kannan@jcu.edu.au
