Introduction to the Club

The JCU Bushwalking Club is a moderate-large size club with approximately 40 members, and a further 30 students and staff who subscribe to our emailing list. Our aim is to provide all students with access to North Queensland’s wilderness areas, and promote an understanding and appreciation of nature.

Many students at JCU do not have their own transport, which makes it difficult to escape suburban life and get out and enjoy nature. Our club hopes to solve this problem by organising car pools and university vehicle hire.

The Bushwalking Club works in two ways: Organised trips are planned once a month. These include day walks, overnight camping trips, and even week long adventures to places such as Hinchenbrook Island, the Atherton Tablelands and Cape Tribulation.

In addition, everyone in the club is connected via email. This means students can organise their own trips just by sending out an E-mail to see who is interested. The club has a large range of camping equipment that is available for all members to use. Without this equipment over night and week-long trips would not be possible.

Bushwalking is a great way to meet people, keep fit and experience some of the natural wonders around Townsville. More information about the club, including a full itinerary of walks, fundraising activities, expectations and safety issues for members can be seen at our web site:

Application supporting Statement

The JCU bushwalking club has a responsibility to provide essential first aid equipment and training to its members. It is also important that we have access to University vehicle hire, as the majority of students do not have their own transport. It is also a requirement of James Cook University that students and staff do not use their own transport for field trips unless University transport is unavailable, and the owner of the vehicle has full comprehensive insurance. We therefore request financial assistance to cover the Insurance Excess cost required by the Student Association to enable us to hire out vehicles.

Class A capital and non capital requests are essential items needed to run the bushwalking club. The items are essential for the well being, comfort and safety of students. This equipment needs to be purchased each year to accommodate and ever increasing number of students wishing to come out on over night and week long trips.
