Overview

Digital Imaging is one of the five majors available in the Bachelor of New Media Arts. The Digital Imaging major concentrates on the development of creative understandings and the needs of the photographic artist as well as the aspiring professional practitioner in photo media.

More specifically students are instructed in the principles and practice of digital photographic capture both on location and in the studio, as well as digital image processing and output. Students also develop advanced skills in image manipulation, colour management, digital workflows and the fine art digital print. This takes place within the context of the study of historic and contemporary art movements with a particular emphasis on the continuing role and relevance of light based image making.

The development of the creative direction and problem solving ability of every student is paramount. Photographic skills are underpinned with research skills, generic academic skills, technology skills and a capacity for independent learning is fostered throughout, equipping students to embrace post-graduate study if they wish to continue beyond their undergraduate degree.

Students who graduate with a major in digital imaging will be well rounded practitioners with allied and complimentary skills and knowledge in an additional area of Minor study (this could be media design, digital sound, digital visual arts or performance). Students will also be able to enrol in electives from outside the School of Creative Arts. In the final year of the degree a professional studies component will enhance and finely tune each student's job readiness with an emphasis on collaborative learning and professional practice.
