School of Creative Arts

Quality…. Growth…. Excitement…

These are the key words that characterize the School of Creative Arts at this point in time. The School has now completely reshaped and repositioned its undergraduate program across the Townsville and Cairns campuses. Our Honours, Masters and PhD programs continue to attract students with outstanding skills and creative research projects. In the last 10 years the School has graduated 33 Masters and 8 PhD students. Many of these are now leading practitioners and researchers both nationally and internationally.

The quality of teaching and learning in the School is excellent. Staff in the School of Creative Arts have now won the prestigious JCU Vice Chancellors Citation for Outstanding Contributions to Student Learning three times in the last five years. Two of the School’s teachers have also been awarded a prestigious national Carrick Citation for outstanding contributions to student learning. These awards provide outstanding evidence of the quality of teaching within the School.

Recent key developments include the formation of External Advisory Boards for both the Townsville and Cairns campuses. The School has also recently appointed a number of new Adjunct staff to provide additional expertise and input into to core activities. Three subjects are now offered completely externally and which cater for both on and off campus students. A number of new Advanced Standing Agreements have been established with institutions in Asia and Scandinavia. Sponsorship agreements are currently being negotiated and to date Sun Studios has provided a major sponsorship deal via the provision of new Baltronics photographic equipment each year. A series of School Workshops have been held and high school students have embraced new opportunities to explore the creative and media arts.

The 2009 academic year will see a new Bachelor of Creative Arts program launched on the Cairns campus. This degree focuses on the performance arts and will further position Cairns as a leading institution for this area of study. This new award not only provides students with a comprehensive study of the roles of the actor, director and writer, they will be exposed to the latest contemporary media and performance techniques and creative devices. A new Digital Media Lab is planned for construction on the Cairns campus to support this degree.

In Townsville, the School shortly moves into its new home at the front of the Douglas campus. This is a turning point in the history and development of the new School of Creative Arts. It signals a fresh beginning and a new era built on quality, excellence and reputation.
