Overview

In Townsville

The performance major is one of the five majors available in the Bachelor of New Media Arts Degree. This major integrates artistic and analytical approaches to a wide range of performance texts, events and processes. Students explore an interdisciplinary range of literary, cultural and personal texts in performance as well as participating in a series of creative workshops to acquire a range of skills to develop their potential as performance artists.

The major covers a full range of performance from theatre and movement to ritual and popular entertainment. Students are involved in a number of practical projects that are underpinned through research and analysis of relevant performance theory.

Students are involved in a number of practical projects, gaining experience as actor, writer, director, designer and new media technician for stage and screen performance. The practical projects are underpinned with research and analysis of relevant performance theory. Students are encouraged to become actively involved in the creation of new performances for regional and educational communities and Tropic Sun, Townsville’s professional theatre company.

In Cairns

The performance major is part of the Bachelor of Creative Industries Degree. Students undertaking studies in the Bachelor of Education and the Bachelor of Arts can also do performance as a major in those degrees. In performance studies students are taught improvisation, learn techniques of acting, create and make text and perform excerpts from a range of Australian and contemporary plays. In their final year students work with industry professionals to present readings and performances at CoCA ( Centre of Contemporary Arts). Throughout the course students are encouraged to become actively engaged with JUTE the professional theatre company resident at CoCA in Cairns.

Facilities

The Creative Arts are taught and experienced in cutting edge learning spaces. The new building on the Douglas campus features the following:

  • Three computer labs which operate independently and also as a “mega lab” with projection and surround sound audio-visual environments;

  • Acoustically designed digital sound editing studios, rehearsal and performance space;

  • Industry standard recording studio and control room;

  • Professional gallery and digitally enhanced foyer area; and

  • Indoor/Outdoor performance areas for exhibitions and multi-arts events.
