What do students think of studying at SoCA?

Andrew Rankin ~ current student

The course so far has been fantastic. Six weeks ago I knew next to nothing about building web sites. I have now been able to build one for my partner's business: sleepyfish.com.au; and best of all I'm finally in a position where I can take control of my own website and start to rebuild it: andrewrankin.com.au. The lectures by Katja Fleischmann are great and the tutorial research assignments have been very useful to understand the world of web design. There has also been some unexpected spin offs that have help my daily photography work. Sept 2008

Susan Thomson ~ BVA Honours 2008

I recently installed Occident & Orient: a Dichotomy of Styles an exhibition and installation of works at the SoCA Gallery. The exhibition is a component of the Bachelor of Visual Arts Honours Degree and unofficially represented the first exhibition at the newly completed gallery. Many considered my decision to be the first to exhibit in a new space risky at best. However, any concerns I might have had were soon overcome. The gallery is an exciting, intimate space and provided up to date, high-tech lighting, sound and video projection facilities essential to the successful mounting of my exhibition. I found the high level of technical and professional assistance of the gallery staff invaluable in preparing for and presenting my exhibition. I would be delighted to have the opportunity to install future projects in the space and wish all involved with the gallery success in the future. Susan Thomson, artist, Sept 2008

Karen ~ current student

After completing my first year with great success I was looking forward to the second year. It has proven to be just as exciting and challenging as the first. So far I have been able to achieve and discover things about myself that I never thought possible. I still enjoy the lectures each week and the lecturers continue to be helpful and very supportive. They are always willing to help and guide you if you ever need it. I highly recommend JCU to anyone considering University.

Melora ~ current student

The course and JCU a have exceeded my expectations. It is so much fun. I have to admit a lot of my social time is spent in the computer labs working on assignments – the labs are open 24/7 and you always find people in the labs, either just to talk to or who to help with advice. Practical assignments have been awesome including putting on a gala presentation based around techno house and dance music culture. My group designed the costumes, arranged the music and even set up a Wiki website.

Amy ~ current student

This course can lead to heaps of careers. We study animation, photography, web design, performance and graphic design. My dream is to be a photojournalist. University is a lot more fun than I thought it would be. I always had the impression it would be dull and hard, but I love it. I’ve made heaps of friends, the lecturers are fun and really go out of their way to help you. They have so much professional experience, from web and type design to graphic design. The assignments have been really exciting and challenge us in different creative ways. My gala presentation was on celebrity characters and rock superstars; we re-enacted movie characters behaving badly! We’re all excited about the new Creative Arts building. Our lecturers designed it and what’s going in it. We already have a huge computer lab with the best and biggest Macs, with all the programs we need. But the new $10 million Creative Arts building is going to be awesome.

Pauline ~ Graduate

Thanks for the subject I did with you last year, “Professional Studies 1”. The practicality of the assignments has given me the knowledge, the impetus and the confidence to go ahead and organise an event that has long been on my mind. The inaugural Cairns Blues Festival will be held on May 3, 2009. That’s all for now and once again, thanks.

Julia ~ Graduate

Studying music at JCU was the best decision of my life. The three-year degree inspired me to undertake my Honours year and has now given me the confidence, inspiration and determination I will need to complete my Masters of Music. Thanks JCU!
