2009 Creative Arts
“Exceptional or Gifted” Program
for Secondary School Students
Information page
The “Gifted and Talented” program provides current senior High School students with the opportunity to enrol for study in the School of Creative Arts at JCU as part of their senior High School Certificate. For those selected, it is an exciting opportunity to undertake tertiary level studies while still at high school and in doing so, access the fantastic facilities and equipment available to students enrolled in the School of Creative Arts in Townsville, and which now features a specialist 10 million dollar building. Accepted students will be in the same class as current first year University students and therefore will be able to engage with a number of students who share a similar passion for creativity and innovation in the arts.
This program is strictly limited to those students who demonstrate a passion for creativity and whom experts in the School of Creative Arts assess as “Gifted and Talented”. This would normally mean that the student is obtaining the grade of Very High Achievement in school-based arts subjects, and/or who has a folio of work that is of a very high standard.
The application and enrolment procedure for students interested in this program is as follows:
- 1.
Students complete the attached Application for Enhanced Study for Exceptional or Gifted Secondary School Students form to formally apply for the entry into the Gifted and Talented program and for specific subjects. Applicants for Creative Arts subjects must also include two letters of support and a folio of art/creative work which will be reviewed by School of Creative Arts (SoCA) staff;
- 2.
If deemed “Gifted and Talented”, the student will be invited to engage in a formal interview with the Head of School and relevant academic lecturer to thoroughly understand the policies and requirements relevant to this program. It is expected that parents and/or guardians will attend this interview;
- 3.
If approved the student will be made an offer into the program and will be required to complete and return an Offer Response form to JCU;
- 4.
The student’s performance in these subjects will be reported to Queensland Studies Authority (QSA) and count toward the student’s Queensland Certificate of Education (QCE);
- 5.
The student is required to abide by all of the policies and rules of the University; and
- 6.
Accepted students must meet with the Head of School half-way through the semester in order to confirm that progress is sufficiently on track to ensure a successful outcome.
In 2009, students will have the opportunity to apply for enrolment in subjects within the following broad areas of creativity:
- 1.
Digital Sound and Music
- 2.
Digital Imaging and Photography
- 3.
Digital Visual Arts and Drawing
- 4.
Performance Arts
One of the additional bonuses for students accepted into this program is that they can apply for credit towards one of the SoCA degrees on successful completion of the relevant SoCA subject.

Testimonial
“Studying at SoCA is an eye opener, and just plain awesome. Being at Uni with these great students and lecturers is an invaluable experience at the age of 16.
I love every minute even though it is quite a challenge. It is a great chance to follow my passion of photography, and improve my skills, while gaining credit towards my senior studies.
I can’t wait to come back when I finish high-school and continue with the Bachelor of New Media Arts…”
