Description:

This degree develops the knowledge and skills needed for contemporary creative arts practice within the context of the global sector known as the “creative industries”. This sector is driven by individuals with creative skills who in order to develop a meaningful career create a demand for their creative outputs. This requires that they have skills in creativity, business and digital technologies. The Bachelor of Creative Industries involves training and development across these three core areas. Through selection of a Major and Minor field of study, students specialise in an area of choice, while maintaining flexibility and developing broad industry-oriented skills. One of the features of the program is the multi-disciplinary focus, including third year projects where students apply their individual discipline expertise within collaborative research and practice environments. Strong engagement with professional arts groups based in the local community e.g. JUTE theatre and Kick Arts is a feature of work-integrated learning opportunities made available to students enrolled in the degree.

o Credit points: Represent the combined value of individual subjects in a degree. One subject usually constitutes three credit points.

Structure

Twelve core subject units provide the theoretical, conceptual and functional foundations applicable to the creative industries, including studies in business, communication, and creative technologies. Along with management and marketing subjects students acquire skills in photography, video, digital media and effective speaking. These core subjects underpin the Major discipline areas.

The major undertaken by the student defines their specialization. The major comprises 8 subjects each with 3 contact hours per week and weighted at 3 credit points.

A minimum of 4 subjects and can either be completed outside the School as Electives or a student can choose to undertake a Minor from within the School of Creative Arts.

Majors

Majors are available in the following areas and students must select one:

  • Media Design:

Media design is a studio-based study area that introduces the principles and methods of digital media design. The program develops with an emphasis is on digital media in contemporary art practices and students learn the role of the artist and the development of creative concepts in media design and art.   • Visual Arts:

Visual arts involves the study of traditional areas including drawing, painting and printmaking. Students also develop knowledge in art history and theory and in their final year, apply their skills in a range of cross-disciplinary formats and projects.   • Performance:

In performance studies students are taught improvisation, learn techniques of acting, create and make text and perform excerpts from a range of Australian and contemporary plays. Students learn Performance theory through the practical exploration of text. The integration of new media’s impact on the role of the performer and on the performance site are complimentary areas of study in the student’s final year. Honours

A fourth year Honours program is available for students who perform with distinction in the undergraduate program. Postgraduate programs are offered at Masters and Doctoral level.
