Biography
Katja moved from Germany to Australia in February, 2007 (exciting!). For the last six years she was Professor for the Design of Print and Online Media at the University of Applied Sciences in Berlin. Before that, in 1997-8, she was Assistant Professor for Graphics and Multimedia Design at New York City Technical College. She has taught, studied and worked in Miami, New York, London, Bournemouth, Wuerzburg and Berlin. Her current research is centered on her PhD topic: Managing the Increasing Complexity of Technology in Digital Media Design Education. One of her key focal points is to establish sustainable relationships between the Creative Arts and the local community and industry.
She has worked as a multimedia designer for companies such as Argonauten, Berlin; Meta Design, Berlin; Organic Online, New York; Raremedium Inc, New York; and Beresfords Design Consultants, London.
what new media art means to me
“In Design the term new media was coined in the 90s and was referring to non-traditional media, such as the Internet and interactive CD-Roms. As new means not existing before the use of the term became confusing with those media now being commonplace. If used in a design context today it usually refers to design for the Internet, DVDs, mobiles phones and other emerging media using digital tools.”
