Introduction to student loans

James Cook University's Student Loans Scheme provides support to students who demonstrate a genuine need for financial assistance. Eligibility for a loan is dependent upon continued study being in jeopardy should the student not receive assistance.

Loans can be approved for:

  1. 1.

    Text books purchased through the University Bookshop

  2. 2.

    Other essential study related expenses

The maximum amount that can be borrowed is $1,000.

Loans will NOT be approved for:

  • Student Association Fees (from 1 July 2006)

  • Purchase of assets; for example, computers, cars etc

  • Air fares

  • Student contributions or Postgraduate Coursework Tuition Fees

  • Late enrolment fees

  • Purchase or repair of a motor vehicle

Loans for all commencing students and loans over $500 require a guarantor.
