O Week

O Week crowd of students

Congratulations and welcome to James Cook University.

Orientation Week, or O Week, is the official start to your university studies and is a university-wide celebration on the Cairns and Townsville campuses. O Week takes place before the start of teaching for Study Period 1 and 2.

O Week is a great opportunity for you to meet your fellow students and lecturers and to explore the campus. As well as fun activities and entertainment, there are info sessions and workshops to help you prepare for university life.

O Week mid-year 2013

Cairns campus – Monday 22 to Thursday 25 July

Townsville campus – Tuesday 23 to Friday 26 July

All new students receive a copy of the Orientation Program by mail, posted to your preferred address. A downloadable version will be available here soon. Check your Orientation Program for activities and session times.

What happens during O Week?

Lots – some of the main activities include:

  • Course and faculty welcomes

  • Campus tours

  • Meeting your student mentors

  • Getting your student ID card

  • Workshops to help you transition to academic studies

  • Discovering the library and online resources

  • Timetable and time management info sessions

  • Financial info sessions covering Centrelink and HECS Help

  • Computing and email info sessions

  • Social sport events, free movies, market days, adventure trips and more.

Orientation online – GetReady4Uni

We encourage all new students to complete GetReady4Uni before starting studies. This is an online introduction to university life at JCU.

International students – orientation and welcome sessions

New international students have their own welcome day before O Week:
