What if I am required to provide certified copies of documents?

Whenever you submit an application to James Cook University (e.g. Credit for Previous Studies or Change of Personal Details), it is essential that you supply correct and complete supporting documentation.

You must submit certified copies of your documentation with your application. Uncertified photocopies and photocopies of certified copies (i.e. where the certification signature and stamp is not original) do not meet our requirements, and your application will not proceed.

If you are submitting a hardcopy photograph for the purpose of a Student ID Card you need to have it certified on the reverse as you would for a passport application.

For the certification of your documents to be acceptable, they must be certified by:

  • the Authority that issued the document, or

  • an Australian university – e.g. JCU's Student Enquiry Centre.

JCU will also accept copies certified by:

  • a Justice of the Peace (JP)

  • Commissioner for Declarations/Notary of the Public

  • a Barrister or Solicitor

  • the University Admissions Centre of any Australian state – e.g. QTAC

  • a Australian overseas diplomatic mission

  • a police officer at or above the rank of Sergeant

  • JCU registered Overseas Agents, or

  • AusAID Posts.

The person certifying the photocopies of the originals must state that the documents they are certifying are a true copy of the original and must provide their signature, occupation, telephone number and affix the official stamp or seal of their organisation (if available) on the front of each copy.

It is your responsibility to ensure that your application is complete at the time of submission.
