Requisites
eStudent automatically checks requisite requirements for subjects and this may block your subject enrolment/s. If you are notified that you have not met a requisite requirement when enrolling in subjects listed on your Potential Enrolments List, and you feel you meet the requirements, you can apply for a requisite waiver. There are two areas in eStudent where you can apply for a requisite waiver:
-
Enrol Online > Requisite Waiver or
-
Request Waiver Request link that is shown after the Study Package information when attempting to enrol in subjects.
Requisites can be other study packages (usually subjects, sometimes courses) - referred to as ‘pre-requisites, anti-requisites, or co-requisites’, or items (such as ‘First Aid Certificate’) - referred to as ‘other requisites’. Any combination of these can be recorded for subjects and/or courses.
Pre-requisites, Co-requisites and Anti-requisites:
-
Pre-requisite - If subject A has subject B as a pre-requisite, subject B must be enrolled in the previous study period before subject A or completed prior to enrolling in subject A.
-
Concurrent means a subject can be taken in the same study period as its pre-requisite.
-
Co-requisite - If subject A is listed as a co-requisite for subject B, both subjects must be undertaken in the same Study Period.
-
Anti-requisite - If subject A is listed as an anti-requisite to subject B, you can only ever do one of these two subjects.
In most cases “a pre-requisite has not been met” error means that the system has not found the pre-requisite/s required for the subject you are trying to enrol in on your record.
In some cases you may have failed to meet one or more of the requisites for the subject.
Enrolling in Pre-requisite subjects via eStudent:
To enrol in a subject with a pre-requisite, you need to have completed or be enrolled in the pre-requisite subject. Add only the pre-requisite subject to your potential enrolments list and then complete the enrolment process. Confirm you are enrolled in the pre-requisite subject by checking your Current Enrolment. Then enrol in the subject which requires the pre-requisite as normal.
Co-requisite subjects error message:
Below is an example of the error message you will receive if a subject has a co-requisite subject which must be studied at the same time. As you can see WS4005 needs to be studied at the same time as WS4504:
Enrolling in Co-requisite subjects via eStudent:
To enrol in co-requisite subjects you need to enrol in both subjects at the same time. Add both subjects to your potential enrolments list and then complete the enrolment process.
Checking subject pre-requisite & other requirements
-
If you need to check whether another subject has any pre-requisite requirements visit Studyfinder at http://www.jcu.edu.au/app/studyfinder/
-
Some courses have progression requisites listed as part of their award requirements, information can be found at http://www.jcu.edu.au/handbooks/2009/ find your Faculty & appropriate level, click on Award Requirements & select your course
Other Requisites:
-
Other Requisite – Conditions that can be imposed on a subject or course that are not pre-, co-, or anti-requisites (ie not completed subjects or admission to courses).
These include things such as: Blue Card, First Aid Certificate, Diving Certificate, Safety Training, Immunisation Certificate, Vacation Work with Report, and Prior Approval (a note usually accompanies this, explaining what is required).
You will need to provide documentation to your Faculty before you can enrol in subjects requiring “Other Requisites”.
Some examples of “Prior Approval” that the system cannot automatically check:
-
To remain in an advanced major a student must maintain a GPA of 5.5 or more
-
To enrol in some subjects you are required to have obtained a specified grade in one or more pre-requisite subjects
-
To enrol in some subjects you must have obtained a specified grade a year 12 school subject for example; HA or better in Maths B to enrol in MA1000. (NB if admitted to course via QTAC these may be checked by the system – otherwise you will have to provide evidence at your Faculty Office.)
-
Prior Approval is also used when the system cannot accommodate a complex requisite, and a note usually accompanies this, explaining what is required.
This list provides some examples, referring to University documentation will provide you with more detailed and specific information.
If you receive an error message for any of the above requisite requirements you need to contact your Faculty Office. Referring to Studyfinder and information on course award requirements will also be beneficial.
What to do if you believe you have satisfied pre-requisites for a subject
You can submit a request for a requisite waiver via email through eStudent.
You must look at conditions for the subject in the online Handbook to find out what in your case is causing the block. Then, if you think your circumstances justify it, submit an email detailing reasons why you believe you have satisfied the pre-requisite conditions.
There are 2 ways to submit a requisite waiver:
-
When enrolling in subjects on your potential enrolments list, once you receive a requisite error message, click on the Request option beside the subject and under the Requisite Waiver heading and submit your request
-
Click on the Enrol Online Menu > Student Waivers, click on Request a requisite waiver button, enter the code for the subject requiring a waiver or search for it, once found enter your reason for requesting a waiver in the box provided and submit your request
This email goes directly to your Faculty office. You should receive a response from your Faculty within five working days of submitting the requisite waiver request.
Students may be required to provide further documentation before a waiver can be granted.
Important Note:
Once you have either applied for the requisite waiver, or decided not to enrol in the subject/s, you must go back to your Potential Enrolment List, remove the subject/s and select the I Want to… Actually enrol in the subjects on my Potential Enrolments List again. To check that you have enrolled successfully, you can visit your Current Enrolment page in eStudent.
