Townsville campus

UniHealth Medical Centre

The UniHealth Medical Centre is located at Shop 7 in the Medilink Retail Building adjacent to the Townsville Hospital, 100 Angus Smith Drive, Douglas and within 100 metres of the JCU Campus. Opening hours are 8.00am to 6.00pm weekdays. JCU students with a Medicare card will be bulk billed for the appointment.

Note: If you cannot attend a scheduled appointment at UniHealth you must cancel your appointment. It is practice policy that a non-attendance fee may be charged for appointments that have not been cancelled.

Pharmaceutical

The nearest pharmacy for filling of prescriptions is located in the suburb of Annandale.

Dentist

A dentist is not available on campus, however if you are a Health Care Card holder you can call 1300 300 850 to make an appointment. The nearest private dentist is located in the Medilink Retail Building almost directly opposite the Unihealth Medical Centre.

Cairns Campus

Services close to campus

A variety of health services are available within walking distance of the campus, and at shopping centres north and south of the campus in Smithfield and Trinity Beach.

The Campus Shopping Village on the corner of the Cook Highway and McGregor Road has a:

  • medical centre with general practitioners and a psychologist,

  • pharmacy

  • dentist

  • radiography service (x-rays, ultrasounds)

  • physiotherapist, and

  • pathology collection centre.

Some health services require you to make an appointment and to bring a referral from a general practitioner. If you are not familiar with the Australian health system you should make inquiries about the cost of a consultation / treatment, whether appointments are necessary, and any potential reimbursements from any medical insurance you may have.

24-hour medical services

Most of the services above have limited opening hours in the evening and on the weekend. In cases where urgent medical consultation and/or treatment is required, the following services are available:

  • 24-hour private medical centre in the city of Cairns (approximately 15 kilometres from Smithfield)

  • The ‘Casualty’ department of the Cairns Base Hospital in the city of Cairns (approximately 15 kilometres from Smithfield)

  • The Queensland Ambulance service—phone ‘000’

Community health service for Australian Citizens

The Smithfield Community Health Centre at 16 Danbulan Street, Smithfield has a number of specialist medical services available for Australian citizens. The Centre is open from 8.00am – 4.30pm, Monday to Friday. Most services are free of charge but require a referral. For more information, phone 07 4226 4800 and ask for the Referral Officer to inquire about the following services:

  • Community health, pre- and post- hospital treatment

  • Consulting an indigenous health worker

  • The child health clinic and child psychologist

  • Physiotherapy, Occupational therapy, Speech Pathology

  • Mental health services, and the

  • Dental service (for Health Care Card holders and pensioners only).

JCU Counselling Service

JCU students may consult a personal counsellor on campus. This service is free and confidential but an appointment is essential.
