The Townsville Fitness Centre is a service available for both students and non-students. All prices charged for Fitness Centre Membership are subsidised by the Student Association.

JCU staff are entitled to membership at the Student Association Member rate. General Hospital staff receive the same rate as JCU students. Casual gym visits are $7.50.
Fitness Assessments & Programs
6 & 12 month memberships include a FREE Fitness Assessment or Exercise Program when you join the Fitness Centre. Just book in for your assessment at reception - allow approximately 3/4 an hour for each service.
Assessments include the testing of:
- Body weight
- Blood pressure
- Body fat
- Body girths
- Aerobic fitness
- Flexibility
- Core Stability
Your program will be designed specifically to cater for your individual needs by our qualified and accredited staff.
Follow up assessments and programs are also available with your membership. Where patrons have memberships of less than 6 months these services will attract a fee.
PLEASE NOTE: DO NOT EAT OR EXERCISE FOR AT LEAST 2 HOURS BEFORE YOUR TEST! - and always observe Fitness Centre Rules.
Fitness Classes
Our classes cater to all levels of fitness and ability. Our weekly classes and instructor timetable is located on the whiteboard in the aerobics area. Our friendly aerobics staff are available for any questions you may have, and suggestions may be forwarded to the Fitness Centre reception. Please note that some classes have a place limit so get in early to secure a place.
Aerobox
Aerobic Boxing. Going the round provides a safe, effective and interesting whole body workout. Its intense nature makes it suitable for the less co-ordinated participant. A class interspersed with skipping, stepping and strength/punching work, makes for an effective workout for men and women alike.
Cross Train
Combining sections from three different styles of class including HiLo, Multipeak, Step, Circuits, Contours, or Firm and Burn. Suitable for all fitness levels.
New Body / Sculpt
A great low impact class of medium complexity which incorporates the use of resistance equipment (optional). Designed to give a low intensity, calorie burning and muscle conditioning workout. Suitable for all fitness levels.
Firm & Burn
A low intensity workout which works to increase the strength end endurance of the major muscles through floor work and hand weights. We guarantee you will feel stronger and more toned after this class!
New Body
A varied workout for those looking to improve or maintain their fitness levels. High and low impact moves are included in this class with a muscle conditioning phase. This class is a combination of high and low impact aerobics with total body strengthening intervals.
Step
Incorporating the use of different heights of boxes, this class is easy to medium complexity. Combination work including using simple arm lines and foot patterns, this is a great class for all stages of fitness, but remember beginners it takes fivce classes to really get the hang of step - stick with it! Step works to ive a great leg workout and improve stamina and coordination.
Step/Sculpt
As mentioned above, step/sculpt involves the use of different heights of boxes and incorporates total body strengthening intervals to help sculpt and shape your body the way you want nt it.
Flex
If you're looking for a lean, toned and firm body then you've just found it. Flex is a high repetition resistance program designed for beginners or the serious weight trainer. This class helps burn fat and tone up at the same time.

Please Note:
Timetable is reduced during exams and holiday periods. No classes are held over the Christmas break.
Squash Courts
Two squash courts are available and bookings can be made at the Fitness Centre reception (Bookings are essential). The courts are available 7 days a week from 6am to 10pm.

Tennis Courts
Four Tennis courts are available FREE of charge for JCU Sport Members at any time. These can also be booked at the Fitness Centre reception, between 6am and 9pm. You have to pick up a net and key from The Fitness Centre, and we will need some sort of ID.

Swimming Pool
The Student Association has a 25m swimming pool situated on the Western side of campus. The pool is discounted for members (on the production of Membership sticker).

Membership Time-outs
We understand that things go wrong... Soo... If, due to holidays, illness, or for study reasons you are unable to attend the gym for a period, you may place your membership on hold. A minimum period of 2 weeks and a maximum of 1 month is allowable for 6 and 12 month membership holders only. Just come in and see us, or ring up the Fitness Centre Manager to make these arrangements. You must do this BEFORE your absence as we do not backdate membership holds.
Memberships must be paid up in full to receive this service.
Payment Conditions
Memberships must be paid in full at the time of joining. If for some reason you are unable to comply with the above please consult the Fitness Centre Manager.
Fitness Centre Rules
- Towels: When attending the Fitness Centre please bring an adequate sized towel
with you (bath towels are acceptable, hand towels are too small). You MUST use your towel at all times, by placing it on the machine you are using. Towels may be hired for $1.50 each.
- Covered shoes must be worn at all times for health and safety reasons. Please, no
thongs or sandals.
- Please wear neat and clean clothing.
- Offensive behaviour and swearing will not be tolerated.
- Please don't chew gum inside the fitness centre.
- Please do not drop your weights, and put them away in the appropriate place after use. This is not for the benefit of staff but simply as a courtesy to other gym members.
- Please do not place weights on benches.
- Upon entry, please log on to the computer as each visit must be recorded.
