Student Computer Loans Scheme

What is the JCU Student Computer Loans Scheme?

The Student Computer Loans Scheme is available to all undergraduate domestic students at James Cook University, studying either full-time, part-time, on campus or off-campus. The Scheme has been established to assist students who do not have access to a computer at home for completion of assignments and other study commitments. The loan consists of a secondhand desktop computer installed with basic JCU student software. This computer is available for loan under the terms of a Loan Agreement to be signed by successful applicants.

The number of computers available will be determined each year based on availability of equipment.

Who can apply?

To be eligible for the Computer Loans Scheme you must:

  • Demonstrate that you have been experiencing ongoing financial hardship, which has hindered your access to or participation in tertiary education. This can be demonstrated in the following ways:

  • Be eligible for or holding a Health Care Card or

  • Be dependent on a person who holds a Health Care Card; or supply sufficient documentary evidence e.g. bank statement, of ongoing financial hardship to enable a comprehensive assessment.

  • Supporting documents may be required to accompany your application.

  • Be a currently enrolled JCU student.

  • Be an Australian Citizen or a permanent resident of Australia or hold a permanent Humanitarian Visa.

Preference will be given to the following groups of students who are under-represented in tertiary education:

  • Students from low socio-economic backgrounds;

  • Students from rural and isolated areas

  • Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander students;

  • Students with a disability;

  • Students from non-English speaking backgrounds; and

  • Women in non-traditional studies (e.g. Engineering, Information Technology)

Please complete a Student Computer Loans Scheme application form and return it, together with relevant supporting documentation to the Student Equity Officer

When do th e applications close?

Dependent upon availability, applications will be processed at the beginning of each semester. As there is a limited number of computers available for loan, you should submit your application as soon as possible.

When will I be notif ied?

All students will be advised by email as soon as possible of the outcome of their application. Please ensure that the email address you provide in your application is current.

The decision made by the Student Equity Office is final based on the information and evidence supplied.

What happens to the information I provide?

All information provided by the applicants will be treated confidentially and will be made available only to Student Equity staff members. PLEASE DO NOT SEND ORIGINAL DOCUMENTS AS T HESE WILL NOT BE RETURNED .
