Postgraduate Education Loans Scheme (PELS)

Australian students can choose to pay their postgraduate coursework tuition fees up front or apply for a loan through the Federal Government Postgraduate Education Loans Scheme (PELS).

This scheme allows students to borrow up to the limit of their course for each semester. The loans are interest and GST free, though, like HECS, CPI indexed annually. Repayment of a PELS loan is similar to HECS, with a minimum repayment threshold and repayment rate dependent upon income. PELS loan repayments are not tax deductible.

PELS is not available to New Zealand citizens.

If you wish to apply for a PELS loan, you must submit a PELS Loan Request form by the relevant census date.

Further information on PELS is available in the booklet PELS – Your Questions Answered 2003 available from DEST’s website or upon request from:

Cairns: Student Administration

Due Date for Payment

If you choose to pay upfront, payment must be finalised by the close of business on the last working day on or prior to the relevant census date. You may pay your fees in instalments, provided that full payment is made by the due dates.

If you do not pay your tuition fees by the census date and have not submitted a valid PELS Loan Request form, your enrolment will be cancelled.

Should you wish to have your enrolment re‑instated following a cancellation, you will be charged a Reinstatement Fee of $100.

Refunds

If you withdraw from subjects or cancel your enrolment by the census date you will be entitled to a refund of your tuition fees.

You will NOT be entitled to a refund of your fees if you withdraw from subjects or cancel your enrolment after the census date.
