Indigenous Students at JCU

Hello and thank you for visiting JCU

Northern Queensland is characterised by a dispersed population with a large number of rural and remote communities, including many Indigenous Australians. JCU recognises this and appreciates its special responsibility to the remote, rural and indigenous communities of our region, and will continue to develop approaches to teaching and course delivery that meet and support the special needs of these communities. As part of this commitment, JCU established the School of Indigenous Australian Studies (SIAS) in 1998. Today we have one of the highest Indigenous participation rates of any university in Australia.

Almost 400 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students are enrolled at JCU across our main campuses in Townsville and Cairns, and study centres in Mackay, Mount Isa and Thursday Island. Indigenous students are well represented in traditional areas such as education, social sciences and health, and are also achieving successfully in other previously unrepresented areas such as science and law. Postgraduate programs are also proving increasingly attractive to Indigenous professionals.

Our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students come from a diverse range of communities - from interstate, urban, rural and remote areas, including the Gulf of Carpentaria, Cape York and the Torres Strait.
