Courses offered by the School of Indigenous Australian Studies (SIAS)
JCU's SIAS offers a range of courses from the Townsville and Cairns campuses. They are available to both Indigenous and non-Indigenous students. If you do not have the appropriate academic entry requirements to enrol into a degree course, JCU offer special Tertiary Access Courses.
Tertiary Access courses
Tertiary Access courses are designed to prepare students who may not have completed secondary school or who do not have the academic entry requirements to enrol in undergraduate courses at JCU. Tertiary Access Courses require one year of full-time study or two years of part-time study. Although the courses are primarily designed for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students, they are also open to non-Indigenous students.
Tertiary Access Courses aim to:
• provide students with the academic skills to enter
into their preferred choice of undergraduate course;
• provide students with the formal prerequisites
for entry into their preferred undergraduate course;
• introduce students to a variety of university subjects;
• provide students with computing and information
technology experience.
There are two ourses available at JCU:
Humanities Tertiary Access Course (HUTAC) Duration: 1 year full time; 2 years part time |
This course prepares students for careers in social work, education, law, archaeology, community welfare, psychology, Indigenous studies and other related fields. Available in Townsville and Cairns. |
Science Tertiary Access Course (SCITAC)* Duration: 1 year full time; 2 years part timeMode: internal or external Campus: Townsville |
This course prepares students for careers in medicine, health sciences, science, engineering and information technology. Available in Townsville only. * availability of this course is subject to numbers. |

Indigenous Media courses
The School’s Media Centre in Townsville is purpose built with excellent digital facilities including a television studio, video editing suites, radio studios and print production rooms.
All media courses give students skills in print, radio and television production and also explore the theoretical background to media issues. SIAS media graduates work in Indigenous and mainstream media around Australia.

Advanced Diploma of Indigenous Studies (Communication) Duration: 2 years full time |
These media courses are designed for Indigenous people who want to enter the field or who may already be attached to a media organisation and wish to broaden their media skills while gaining a university qualification. A quota of non-Indigenous students is also accepted into this program. Students receive a grounding in the media areas of print, radio and television production, and also explore the theoretical background to media issues. The communication/media subjects are offered at JCU’s Townsville campus only. Students benefit from excellent facilities in Townsville for
media studies, plus a dedicated staff of media professionals

Indigenous Studies courses
These courses are designed for those who wish to gain a deeper understanding and appreciation of the history, cultures, languages, environment, issues, law, politics, and ways of knowing and being of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
The courses takes a rights-based approach and are offered to both Indigenous and non-Indigenous students. They will greatly assist those who work or wish to work, for and with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in Indigenous affairs, government, education, the community sector and a variety of other areas.
A specially designed subject, Linking Indigenousness, is delivered each year by field trips to traditional Indigenous lands and communities. This subject provides opportunities to experience first hand the diversity of Indigenous Australian communities.

Bachelor of Indigenous Studies Duration: 3 years part time |
Indigenous Studies is designed to give students a deeper understanding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and their histories, environment, cultures, languages, politics and economies. Courses are offered to both Indigenous and non-Indigenous students. These courses recognise the significance of Indigenous languages and cultures as an important part of the heritage of all Australians. Indigenous Studies can be studied at JCU under two degree programs,
including: At JCU the Bachelor of Arts is also available as a joint degree with the Bachelors of Business, Commerce, Community Welfare, Education, Journalism, Law, Social Work or Tourism Management. Joint degrees provide you with expertise in a complementary discipline in reduced time, generally four to five years. |
