ASPIRE
James Cook University’s Student Equity Policy is committed to promoting, encouraging and valuing equity and diversity with respect to its student population. In particular, Student Equity strives to increase access to tertiary studies for students from a variety of backgrounds, and to provide these students with the optimal environment to achieve a high level of success.
Based on this rationale, the ASPIRE programme supports disadvantaged high school students who have the academic potential, and the desire, to study at University. These students may not consider higher education as an option because of the challenges they face, such as financial difficulties, living in remote areas, lack of role models and encouragement.
The ASPIRE programme supports students from the following equity groups which are identified by the Commonwealth Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations (DEEWR):
* Low socio-economic
* Aboriginals and Torres Strait Islanders
* Students with a disability
* Linguistically and Culturally Diverse backgrounds (i.e. Non-English speaking)
* Students from rural and isolated areas
