Reading and Studying

Cube S
The S block represents the first step and involves Surveying and Skimming the text along the lines of the section in this module called Getting an Overview. Don't forget, however, that this assumes you are Reading for a Purpose.

Cube Q
The Q stands for Question. Instead of just reading paragraph headings and chapter titles such as "Basic Concepts of Reading", change to "What are the Basic Concepts of Reading?" These questions will become "hooks" on which to hang new information. The questions can also relate to the Who?, What?, When?, Where?, Why? and How? of the reading.

The Q may also help to remind you to be an active and critical reader and to Question the ideas being presented to you by the author. The section called Every Word? contains a passage about active and critical reading.

Cube R1

The R1 block stands for Reading, not just any old reading but the effective reading we have talked about in this module! Once you have established the purpose for your reading then the techniques described in the section called Pacing Yourself will help you to read with smoothness and alertness.

Cube R2

The R2 block stands for Recall.

Without looking at your book or notes, mentally visualise and sketch, in your own words, the high points of the material immediately upon completing the reading. This is another technique designed to encourage active learning and can be particularly useful when the material you are reading is difficult to understand. Other strategies for "tough reading" include:
* reading aloud
* using a dictionary
* comparing with other texts
* discussing with other students, mentors, tutors and lecturers

Cube R3

The R3 block stands for Review.
Look at your questions, answers, notes and check to see how well you did recall the new information.
Fix carefully in mind the logical sequence of the entire idea, concepts or problem. Finish up with a mental picture of the whole issue.
